Guide to Surviving Black Friday

I know, I know. Black Friday represents everything that is wrong with our over commercialized society. We spend the day giving thanks for all the blessings in our lives and then hours later get in a wrestling match over the last pair of $19.99 boots. I know it's silly, I know it's ridiculous, I swear each year I will never go back. But I always do. I don't do it every year to fight through crowds in the cold to get a deal. I do it because it has become a tradition with the ladies in my family. Every year after our dinner my mom, sister, aunt, and cousin brave the cold and the crowds and shop through the night. We talk and tell stories on the drive, bustle through the masses of people together, and LAUGH until we almost pee our pants. We even get a little jump start on our Christmas shopping. But I think we mostly put ourselves through the chaos each year to be together.

I can't even count the number of times I've done a Black Friday all-nighter but through them all I've learned some tricks the hard way. Here are my tips for surviving Black Friday!

Be Mentally Prepared.  You may think this sounds silly because it is shopping after all but it can get rough out there people. Get in the mindset that you will likely be tired, want to kill several people for being completely rude, and maybe even disappointed.

Along with this you should also be physically prepared. If you are hard core and plan to shop through the night make sure you get a good night sleep the night before and maybe even a nap before you start! I will be hitting up Starbucks for sure! You will likely be stuffed from Thanksgiving dinner and think you will never eat again but you will so bring snacks to tide you through! Dressing in layers is always smart. Depending on the weather it will be cold outside but the hustle and bustle of being inside a mall may leave you wanting to shed some layers. I've been to an outlet mall in years past where they limited the number of customers in the store at once and we had to stand in line just to get in! I've never been in a Coach store since.

Have a plan. Obviously, it's a good idea to jot down everyone you have on your list and some ideas you have for them. Looking for some big ticket items? You want to make sure to hit up those stores first before the goods get gone! Some stores also have special coupons or codes so be sure to have those printed or up on your phone and ready to go!

Be kind and courteous. Stressful and chaotic situations like this generally brings out the worst in people. Take the higher road and try and be polite. I've been shoved, kicked, and even had someone grab something right from my arms reach! Make a commitment to stay classy

Have fun! Most importantly make sure to enjoy yourself! Like I stated in my intro I don't do this every year to make sure I get doorbuster deals. I do it because it's a fun once-a-year activity to do with my family. Above all else--have fun with it!

Happy Shopping!

  1. I used to go Black Friday shopping with my mom all the time! While I'm now more of a Cyber Monday gal, there is definitely something to be said for the rush of an awesome Black Friday deal!

  2. My family typically goes to the movies all together on Black Friday and skips the mall crowd. If we go out to shop it is typically late afternoon when all the all-nighters are heading to bed.

  5. I was actually never into Black Friday because I was always too lazy to wake up early. Now with Cyber Monday there's really no need for me to go to the stores. This year I finished all my Christmas shopping already so I'll be lounging around all weekend :)

  10. Black Friday shopping is a tradition in my family too, for a lot of the same reasons you have. It's just a great excuse for us to spend time together and start crossing things off our Christmas list. It's also when my mom has us pick out our Christmas goodies too, so that's always fun!
