The mint julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. The iconic cocktail consists of bourbon, sugar syrup, and mint...simple, right? I've honestly never been a big fan of the julep, mostly because I have a very low tolerance for the taste of bourbon (hence this sweetened up bourbon drink) . Blasphemy for a Kentuckian, I know. But this blackberry julep satisfies my need for sweetness and lets me wave my Kentucky pride proudly--win-win!
I picked up Southern Living's Around the Southern Table cookbook a few months ago and have been googly eyeing so many of the recipes. I came across their blackberry julep recipe and knew it would be perfect.
Better yet..it's super simple..but looks oh so fancy.
Derby Blackberry Mint Julep
2 ounces of fine Kentucky bourbon (I used Angel's Envy)
4-5 mint leaves
2 lemon wedges
1 tablespoon sugar
Place the mint leaves, lemon wedges, blackberries and sugar into the bottom of your glass.
While the mason jars are cute I now realize that I need julep glasses. Especially, since this drink is so good that I'll have it on repeat all summer.
Are you a julep fan?
