Dreaming of Derby: Blackberry Mint Julep

blackberry mint julep recipe

The mint julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. The iconic cocktail consists of bourbon, sugar syrup, and mint...simple, right? I've honestly never been a big fan of the julep, mostly because I have a very low tolerance for the taste of bourbon (hence this sweetened up bourbon drink) . Blasphemy for a Kentuckian, I know. But this blackberry julep satisfies my need for sweetness and lets me wave my Kentucky pride proudly--win-win!

I picked up Southern Living's Around the Southern Table cookbook a few months ago and have been googly eyeing so many of the recipes. I came across their blackberry julep recipe and knew it would be perfect.

Better yet..it's super simple..but looks oh so fancy.

Derby Blackberry Mint Julep
2 ounces of fine Kentucky bourbon (I used Angel's Envy)
4-5 mint leaves
2 lemon wedges
4-5 blackberries
1 tablespoon sugar
club soda
ice

Place the mint leaves, lemon wedges, blackberries and sugar into the bottom of your glass.

Now take your spoon and muddle it all up until everything is combined and the sugar dissolved.

Add in the bourbon....be generous. Drop in the ice and pour in the club soda and let the bubbles fill to the rim.

While the mason jars are cute I now realize that I need julep glasses. Especially, since this drink is so good that I'll have it on repeat all summer.

Are you a julep fan?

If I Were Going to Prom I'd Wear This!

This post may contain affiliate links. Purchasing through them help support this website.
It's officially Prom Season. Go to any sit down restaurant on a Friday or Saturday night and you are bound to see flocks of teenagers dressed to the nines sporting corsages and boutineers. It's so funny seeing it now and thinking how young they look because I'm sure people thought that same about me all those years ago while I was dining with my date for our oh so fancy dinner at the local Mexican restaurant.

Prom was a big deal at my high school. Girls would start shopping for dresses around Christmas, fry themselves in the tanning bed (I spray tanned!) for months, and even walk around with saran wrap around their waists to ensure the dress fit!

I love seeing pictures on Facebook of all the recent proms and seeing how the style trends change. For example, I remember during my prom years the two-piece look was falling out of style, but now it looks like it is back in full force.

I could look at dresses all day so it was very fun for me to put together this post on what I would wear if I were going to prom! Albeit, the only invitation I will be getting is to be a chaperone.

I distinctly remember thinking all of my prom dresses were the most beautiful creations on Earth and that I would wear them over and over again. No. They are all stuffed into the back of my closet collecting dust. If only options such as Rent the Runway had been available back in my day! Some great options for young girls for prom!

Now I want to go to prom..or at least an occasion where I can get a big pretty dress!

What are some of your favorite prom dress memories?

Dreaming of Derby: Hats!

On Derby Day it's all about the HATS! Some of the most interesting images of the day focus on the wide array of hats in the crowd. Whether you're in Millionaire's Row or partying in the Infield you can show off your personality and style with your hat. Some of these hats are truly like a piece of art.

While others are just out of this world!

My hats from Derby past...

There are so many options for hats but here are my favorites!

The fascinator is the modern girl's answer to the Derby hat! The miniature hat has all of the sass and personality of a large hat but more chic and practical. This is my personal favorite option..who doesn't love a headband?

Details: BlueBlack/WhiteRedBlack/Purple

The wide brimmed hat oozes with class and sophistication.  Try walking around in one of these and not raising a pinkie with your drink :)
Details: CoralNavy/CreamBlack/WhiteRed

Or better yet..break out your glue gun and make your own! Check out the links below.

5 Things on Friday

One. Jamberry Nails

Have you heard of Jamberry? This company makes "nail wraps" in fun colors and patterns that look and feel just like a gel manicure! A friend and Jamberry consultant was nice enough to let me try out some samples and I was so impressed--both with the ease of application and the look. A regular manicure for me lasts roughly 8 hours..I wish I were kidding. I'm on day 5 and still going strong! I work in a pretty conservative office environment so I can't go too crazy with my nails but I loved using the floral nail wrap for a fun accent nail. I paired the accent nail with OPI Sweet Memories for a feminine look. There are endless colors and patterns to choose from. I can't wait to try more!

Check out Jamberry Nail Wraps to browse all the options!

Two. Earth Day

Wednesday was Earth Day and instead of going to the gym or my Zumba class I opted to take a hike. I'm lucky enough to live smack dab in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains so there are plenty of hills to climb. It's so easy to take for granted the beauty of a place that you are exposed to everyday but this natural beauty was truly breathtaking! I definitely got my workout in climbing to the top of this baby!

Three.  Anthropologie Giveaway

Four. Backpack Purses

Have you all seen these lately? They're apparently making a BIG comeback. I'm pretty sure the last time these were in style I sported one just like this...please tell me you did too.

Nonetheless, I can't deny that I really want one now! Some are so cute and would be perfect for summer travel. I know it's a trend and I will likely not want to carry it forever so here are some cheapies I have my eye on.

Five. Rocksbox.

I finally jumped on the bandwagon and signed up for my first Rocksbox. Subscription boxes are so fun and such a nice surprise to find in the mail once a month. This may be my favorite one. So have you ever dreamed of going into your favorite store buying everything you want..leaving the tags on..wearing it for a month..then returning it? (hopefully I'm not the only one with a fashion criminal mind) Rocksbox gives you that option (without being a fraud!)! They send you a box with 3 high quality jewelry pieces each month...you wear them all you want (or have option to buy)..then you can send them back and get a new box of new pieces! GENIUS. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS?

Here are my pieces from my first box.

Perry Street Abby Necklace (Retails $64)
